  • Understand normal respiratory anatomy and physiology
  • Discuss how anaesthesia may affect the patient’s ventilation
  • Identify the physiological effects of mechanical ventilation
  • Case Studies: head trauma causing raised intracranial pressure, traumatic diaphragmatic hernia, use of a neuromuscular block during an ophthalmic procedure

Tubes, lines and drains - a practical approach to their placement and management

This session aims to provide you with as many practical tips as possible for tube, line and/or drain placements. There are many different techniques in which tubes, lines and/or drains are placed and the techniques that are utilised are often down to user preference of the person placing that tube, line or drain.

Taking this into consideration, this means, as nurses, we are often expected to be familiar and confident with multiple different techniques which can be overwhelming if you are not placing these tubes, lines and/or drains often. Ultimately, it doesn’t usually matter which technique the placer utilises to place and secure the patients tubes, lines or drains if the techniques are safe for the patient.

Regenerative Medicine: The use of Stem Cell Therapy

This presentation will provide an introduction to regenerative medicine and the use of stem cell therapy in canines.
As the lead nurse at Davies for this new and exciting procedure, Emily will aim to cover what stem cell therapy is and the types of conditions it can be used to treat; as well as exploring some clinical based evidence.

Emily will explain the procedure for obtaining cells, the laboratory process and cell administration, plus discuss her role within this area; as a referral based RVN.

Feline Age Related Diseases

Often our clients will remark about how the poor coat condition, or jumping up less is ‘just old age’, but it’s highly likely our ageing feline patients are suffering with at least one age related disease.

Veterinary nurses are well placed to have conversations with clients surrounding this topic, and we can manage these patients effectively using a team based approach.

This presentation will cover:

  • The common age related diseases seen in cats aged 7 years upwards
  • How to manage these patients effectively
  • How to use recent literature to help us use evidence based medicine when supporting these patients

Davies Veterinary Specialists

Courtney is originally from New Zealand where she trained and qualified. She has been working as a veterinary nurse since 2007 and after working in several small animal clinics in New Zealand, an anaesthesia passion took her to a large referral hospital in Australia.

In 2016, Courtney made the move to the UK where she most recently worked as an Anaesthesia Registered Veterinary Nurse at the Royal Veterinary College and also as a Clinical Educator in Anaesthesia for a leading veterinary equipment manufacturer and supplier. She now works for Davies Veterinary Specialists.

Throughout her studies and career, she started Veterinary Anursethesia on various social media platforms to share anaesthesia tips with the veterinary community. She has written several journal articles and textbook chapters, and enjoys speaking about the practical side of anaesthesia monitoring – in practice, at CPD events and national congresses.

Jessica is a Veterinary Technician Specialist in emergency and critical care. Her main areas of interest include stabilisation of the emergency patient, to include management of the respiratory patient, patients in shock, anaesthesia for the critical patient & CPCR.  Jessica also has an interest in human factors within veterinary medicine.

When Jessica is not working, she enjoys spending time on her parent’s farm looking after their many animals, walking in the mountains and shopping!

Sophie McMurrough HeadshotSophie McMurrough RVN VTS (SAIM)

Sophie is a Registered Veterinary Nurse and a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Small Animal Internal Medicine. She is the creator of the social media page Veterinary Nurse Medicine Geek and works in clinical practice as a medicine nurse in a specialist referral hospital, UK.

Sophie is a certified RECOVER Rescuer with a particular interest in endocrinology, lab work and emergency medicine. She is an author and an international CPD lecturer.

Emily Saunders HeadshotEmily Saunders RVN

Emily is currently working as an RVN in a busy small-animal referral hospital as a Diagnostics Nurse. Her daily duties are centered around anaesthesia and supporting patients through multidisciplinary diagnostics procedures.

She is a mentor for newly qualified nurses taking the leap into referrals and is also part of the Regenerative Medicine Team, as well as a Feline Friendly Advocate.

After qualifying in lockdown, Emily briefly stayed in general practice before expanding her career. She has undertaken several volunteering posts around the world and strongly believes in patient advocacy and sharing knowledge with others. Her top interests are anaesthesia, analgesia, feline nursing and supporting new nurses and students.

Royal Canin Feline Healthy Ageing Clinic, University of Liverpool

Kelly qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2015, and began to delve deeper in to feline medicine and welfare. She has completed the ISFM Diploma in Feline Nursing, the ISFM Advanced Certificate in Feline Behaviour, and has recently achieved a Masters of Research in Anthrozoology where she researched an owners ability to recognise chronic dental pain in cats.

Kelly is currently the Clinical Lead for the Royal Canin Feline Healthy Ageing Clinic at the University of Liverpool, which is a project aiming to extend the quality of life in ageing cats through research and education. In addition to the day to day running of clinic, Kelly provides education to vets, nurses and the public on the topics of feline behavior, feline welfare, and supporting the ageing cat.
