Case Study: Chelsea Barfoot

Chelsea Barfoot recently completed the Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants (2024). We caught up with Chelsea to ask her about her time on the course and her plans for the future.

Upon getting my dream job as a Veterinary Assistant/Animal Care Assistant 2 years ago, I wanted to progress further within my professional and personal development, and wanted to become qualified within my role. I undertook the course ‘Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants’ (online/work based) through The College of Animal Welfare. I chose to complete my course through CAW due to hearing many positive reviews about the college, and with my work colleagues completing the same course before, with some nurses completing their qualification here.

I chose this course, as it was suitable to my role and being able to complete a work/online based course was a great option for me, due to family and work commitments but still allowing me to study, whilst taking personal factors into consideration. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the course. It has allowed me to understand my role in more depth, with now great underlying knowledge. The course looked at 3 units with various categories involved within them suitable to my role, requiring written, exams and practical assessments. Not only do I now understand why we do what we do on a daily basis, but it has allowed me to learn and become more knowledgeable within my role, which is what I wanted to achieve from the course.

The course allowed me to use my work hours as practical hours, which I think is essential to learning. Not only is paperwork and qualifications important, but getting hands on within the role, alongside completing written work is key to a successful role and career, the practical assessments were definitely my favourite part. Additionally, the course required staff within the workplace to support me during my time at college, this was particularly important to learn from qualified nurses and seterinary surgeons. Alongside this, CAW offered great support at all times, with a great website full of resources and online library and with my very own designated tutor. My tutor was always very kind and helpful, supporting and helping me achieve a high mark and with many years of experience herself as a qualified nurse. From all this I was able to achieve my main goal for joining college, in gaining knowledge and qualifying. The only difficulty I found personally, was support from other students also undertaking this role and course. Being able to discuss and bounce ideas back and forth, could have been useful. In saying this, I was still able to gain ideas and knowledge from college tutors, college support and work colleagues.

My future goal, is to one day become a qualified nurse, but for now I want to learn and gain as much knowledge around nursing prior to signing up for the next stage in my career. This course also allows me sign up for the nursing course with CAW, now I meet the entry requirements, which is also another benefit from undertaking the Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants qualification. Lastly, I would recommend and give advice to anyone thinking about this course if you would like to know more about your role, wanting to gain a qualification, require a course to get into a university or college to undertake nursing, or like myself want to use this course to gain as much knowledge so when you do apply for nursing one day you will already know so much to help in the future.
