Peregrines Raise Chick in Condemned Glasgow Flats [Video]

A pair of peregrine falcons have successfully raised a chick in a condemned ‘Red Road’ high-rise housing complex in Glasgow. As the disruption of breeding birds is illegal, demolition had to be halted.

A joint effort by the Glasgow Housing Association and the demolition contractor to provide an alternative nesting box was unsuccessful as the birds stayed put in their 24th floor apartment.

Volunteers from the Raptor Group set up a remote research camera as an unobtrusive means of monitoring the birds. Although the chick has now already left the nest the pair will continue to provide for the fledgling for several weeks, after which they will normally leave the area and the demolition will resume.
